Snowshoes! MSR Lightning Ascent

MSR Lightning Ascent snowshoes

I’ve always loved winter hiking, and have done some great snowy adventures, but have also gotten myself into some really deep powder where snowshoes would’ve been perfect.

One of our daughters started school in North-West Wisconsin, and is playing baseketball.  Since basketball season coincides with the absolute coldest season in Wisconsin, Karen bribed me with snowshoes so I could get out and enjoy the snowy Wisconsin and Minnesota trails when in the area for games.

Deciding on Snowshoes

After some research and deciding that I didn’t mind spending the extra money for a really good pair, I went with the MSR Lightning Ascent 30″ black snowshoes.  These are MSR’s top of the line snowshoe with all around excellent reviews and recommendations.  While they may be overkill for basic, groomed trails, they’ll allow me the flexibility to get into the backcountry whether we’re in Colorado, Wisconsin, Illinois or Minnesota…all bringing something a little different.  These will do it all.

The Ascents come in both men’s and women’s versions, 22, 25 and 30 inch lengths.  The length you want is based on the type of terrain but most importantly your total weight with gear – the heavier your weight, the more float you’ll need and want the longer size.  You can add a separate tail that adds 5 inches, allowing you to get a smaller size and expand them as the adventure demands it.

The Lightning Ascent is equipped with the Paragon Binding system, a slip in style mesh binding that works with a variety of boot styles.  You set the straps, slip into the mesh and tighten the heel strap to hold your foot in place.  It’s quick and easy to use and provides more comfort.

I paired these with a new set of  REI Co-op Traverse Trekking Poles.  I have, and still use, my Black Diamond poles that I really like, but I had a gift card so decided to add these to the gear closet.  I’ve not used them yet, but we have 5-10″ of powder forecasted for later this week, so hopefully I’ll get to break these in!

I’ll follow up with a review after I get to actually use these. I can’t wait!
