We’ve added a Side by Side to our arsenal of toys! Offroad fun here we come!!!!
Side by Side Purchase
We have a 2016 Jeep Wrangler that we’ve modified and tow behind our motorhome. It’s our ‘daily driver’ when we’re parked somewhere, and it’s our offroad toy when we’re in places to enjoy that. When in Moab, we met up with my cousin and aunt. Jeff brought his Can Am Maverick X3 side by side (2 seater) so we rented a Polaris Razr 4-seater to join them for some off-road fun (we could not find a Can Am on short notice).
We really enjoyed it, the ride was SO much smoother than the Jeep, and this was a rental unit, not a privately owned and cared for machine. (To be fair, this unit was very well maintained and in great condition!)
I’ve said from the day we bought the Jeep back in 2016 I always said “Jeep’s make great third vehicles.” The time had finally come to purchase a ‘real’ vehicle for Karen. I started to look at something that could be flat-towed, so we looked at the Lincoln Nautilus. That same dealer happened to be a Subaru dealer and the Outback caught our eye – we’ve always wanted one, but they can’t be flat-towed. This started the conversation of “Ya know, we could get rid of the Jeep and get that side by side, then trailer the SxS and Subaru.” 24 hours later we had a Subaru Outback in the driveway.
2023 Can Am Maverick X3
I started looking after we got back to Illinois from Moab, I wanted to see what all was available. I didn’t want to get a particular model only to spend twice as much on upgrading it – buy it up front, factory installed, at less cost.
I over-analyze these kinds of purchases, I know from owning a couple of Jeeps that what the factory offers isn’t always the best option. I joined some forums and FaceBook groups to try to dig into that type of information. Turns out, for the most part, what you can get from the factory is pretty good! Everything else will be add-ons or complete replacements anyway. The dealer already installed the windshied, and that’s the ONE component I would’ve bought after-market from Bent Metal or similar.
We pretty much went all out and got the most loaded one they had. Certainly a budget buster, but it was the only model with the Smart Shox – a component many people end up adding anyway. We wanted a roof, we wanted the higher horsepower, we knew we’d end up widening it to 72″ and that’s NOT a cheap upgrade.
We got quotes from several dealers who had them in stock in the color we wanted – all black. We ended up working with Jordan at World of Powersports in Decatur. Man did we hit the jackpot with him! Super personable, knowledgeable and a straight shooter. The sales process was painless and we appreciate that!
We picked it up and have it at the house in the garage, working on installing communications, lights, blinkers, etc. All the crazy stuff the new money pit needs! We’re planning to head to AZ in March 2023 to meetup with the same cousin and aunt we met in Moab and hit the Glamis dunes! Can’t wait!
